We are seeking a dynamic employment lawyer with experience gained ideally in‑house or from a City law firm.

The successful candidate can look forward to a rewarding and stimulating career with an international market leader in this sector. You will be expected quickly to engage with decision makers across and outside the business and build and manage those relationships. Capable of managing a large workload and taking decisions which deliver the right commercial outcome every time, you will also have the communication skills and personality to influence and win support from the front line to the boardroom.

You will be a key member of the Legal team. As well all being able to advise on all aspects of employment law, this opportunity is wide ranging and you will be expected to be prepared to assist with other areas of commercial law from time to time. Although you will be based in London, there will be some focus on supporting the European HR team.

The role is based at Travelers’ offices in the City of London and reports to the General Counsel, Europe.


Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities
Your responsibilities will include:
  • developing and maintaining an effective working relationship with members of the UK and Ireland based HR team as well as working with members of the US-based HR and HR legal teams on employee relations matters;
  • working on a full range of transactional and policy matters including hiring, compensation, benefits and terminations;
  • keeping the business up to date with developments in UK law, in particular UK and Irish employment law;
  • reviewing and negotiating commercial agreements relating to all aspects of the company’s business in the UK and Ireland;
  • advising the company’s underwriting, marketing, finance, risk and operations teams on a variety of issues.
  • instructing and managing external law firms where appropriate;

Education, Work Experience & Knowledge
To Be Successful

You will work as part of a busy and enthusiastic in-house corporate legal team and must demonstrate well developed analytical thinking, commercial awareness and communication skills as well as being capable of providing pragmatic advice with often short time lines. You will work under general supervision of the European General Counsel, be expected to set priorities and meet specific goals and objectives and be committed to collaboration with local and US-based HR and HR legal colleagues.


What We Expect
  • A professional qualification as solicitor or barrister in the UK is an essential requirement for this role along with direct post-qualification experience in employment law in the UK.
  • Recent in-house experience in an insurance company or other financial services organisation is desirable.
  • From time to time, the ability to work in an environment that can be fast paced and ambiguous will require the successful candidate to be flexible at short notice, to connect with people across different time zones.
