Responsibilities/Job Description:

The Lead EHS Specialist reports to the EHS Manager.  The role of the Lead EHS Specialist is to support the EHS department to assure operational compliance with Canadian regulations, laws, and standards issued by government agencies for enforcement purposes.  This position is responsible for developing, coordinating and maintaining the Company’s EHS management system in accordance with company policy and Canadian regulations.

EHS Systems Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research and summarize Canadian provincial and federal regulations.  Conduct and prepare regulatory applicability studies.
  • Develop, Implement, and monitor the EHS Management System in compliance with the National Energy Board regulations.
  • EHS, analysis, trending and report generation for various levels in the organization.
  • Develop and deploy EHS Data Management Processes contributing to process improvements.
  • Manage EHS Audit/Self Assessment Program and EHS Training processes.
  • Development or update of EHS manuals and forms based on regulatory changes or internally driven initiatives.
  • Provide lead support and oversight for integrated EHS information management system.
  • Lead EHS Communications and Data Management Processes (e.g. EHS Newsletter, Portal Information Management, record retention practices, etc.).
  • Function as Team Lead or team member on EHS special projects.
  • Development and continuous improvement of a sustainable EHS Management System. 

Basic/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Industrial Safety, Environmental Science, related field or additional relevant experience.
  • Minimum of 7 years experience with knowledge and practical experience with Canadian Federal and Provincial EHS regulations. 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills with effective interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated EHS technical and/or procedure writing skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computers and Microsoft Office products, primarily the use of word processing, EHS database applications, presentation and spreadsheet software.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Hazardous Material Manager (CHMM) or other EHS certification. 
  • Experience using defined processes for managing EHS risks and determining risk hierarchy.
  • Strong project management skills with practical experience developing and executing project work plans.
  • Experience with EHS Management Systems (ISO14001, ISO1800/OSHAS18001)
  • Excellent analytical skills with the demonstrated ability to analyze multifaceted situations/problems/concepts along with the capacity to venture beyond core competencies.
  • Ability to give clear direction and support to client groups to ensure compliance with company policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast paced setting with minimal supervision.
  • Natural gas/oil transmission industry experience.
  • Familiarity with incident investigation methodologies (e.g. TapRoot, etc.).
